I’m thinking Youtube and their ilk. If you’re willing to auto-add the thumbnail as a (WP 2.9) Post Thumbnail I’ll do the footwork for you on finding which of the video services you support have grabable thumbnail images. Youtube’s is particularly easy. And HD thumbnails even.

Now I know you’ve mentioned elsewhere that it would require server-side software to grab the thumbnails for uploaded videos (were you thinking mmpeg) but there might be something else that could be done there too.

Ah. Unfortunately I don’t have the time to add such a feature. Maybe one day though…

Darn those Automattic people for hiring you and giving you too much work. Sigh. ??

I am recoding VVQ from scratch though in what little free time I have, but with v7.0.0 I’m just looking to get the basics in.

    +1 on this thread ??

I’m using VVQ on my site, and would love to be able to easily place thumbnails for each of the quicktime videos presented. In particular, a single post might have several videos, where I would specify the same thumbnail for each vid, for ease of insertion.

Any thoughts for adding a thumbnail to my quicktime vids?

    Thanks!

I’m phasing out QuickTime support. It’s frankly a horrible way to embed videos, especially for Windows users.

I’ll add a +1 to this thread too. Thumbnail support would be absolutely awesome. Most services produce a thumbnail for their videos, so it could be grabbed, saved and added as the wp thumbnail.

    +1 000 000 to this thread!!!

    Yeah–

    for me on this…

If I knew how to code like this (and also had the time to do it) I’d make a code that would grab the thumbnail image as an option and then upon clicking, opened the resulting video in a lightbox… Why has no one made something like this yet?

maybe something like [videosite:t 123XXX] where “videosite” would be the usual name of the video host, then the “:t” argument indicates that this will be a thumbnail instead of the usual video embed. upon clicking, it’ll open the link in a separate window, but if you have one of the many lightbox plugins, it can open up in a lightbox by just doing [lightbox][videosite:t 123XXX][/lightbox]

    My 2¢

Why has no one made something like this yet?

Because it’s a lot of work and I don’t have time to finish the new version of this plugin let alone add in new complicated features. ??

Work that pays me comes before work (like this) that doesn’t.

I’d pay for this if it was a premium plugin ??

Hey… Why not just use Embedly’s API?

Someone already built a thumbnailing engine on their API… you can just drop that in with a few lines of extra code to call up the thumbs….

    Check it out:

Woah, Thumbnailer is a pretty slick service. That is certainly something I will consider supporting. It’ll likely be a while though before I find the time to get it in though. Lots of higher priority work left to be done on the plugin and too little time. ??

I’ve always wanted to have thumbnails for my videos automatically generated, and I’ve finally learned enough to release my own plugin to do the job. Hope anyone looking for this can solve their problem with Video Thumbnails.

I believe it should work fine with the Vimeo, YouTube or Blip.tv embedded using VVQ, I’d love to get some feedback before I officially list support though.
