[Plugin: Video Thumbnails] Vimeo thumbnails not found

  • I’m currently working on my portfoliosite, but for some reason I can not get vimeo-thumbnails to work with Vimeo.
    I’m not very advanced in php or other scripting languages so it’s hard for me to find out what’s going wrong here. What I do know is that more plugins that try to pull information from vimeo are having problems.
    Youtube is no problem, but I really want to use vimeo on this site.

    Can somebody maybe have a look and help me solve this problem!

  • The “20s” on the right side means that any computer program that asks for that record, should forget it after 20 seconds. This is an exceptionally short time. Usually it’s hours. The short time is used because Vimeo’s hosting solution uses so many IPs. In 20 seconds they have changed the requests to b.vimeocdn.com be served by a different server in a different IP address.

    For example this time it responded with these that I haven’t encountered before:

    a1638.g.akamai.net A 204.188.136.180 20s
    a1638.g.akamai.net A 204.188.136.196 20s

    There are at least five IP ranges your sysadmins should whitelist, possibly more. The addresses belong to Akamai, one of the biggest hosters on the planet. You might not be the only one suffering from their blocking, now or in the future. Most people know they don’t know enough to bring it up with the sysadmins in any useful way and are afraid of revealing their non-techiness, leading to their customers being less happy overall than those using different hosting providers. This can affect their bottom line in a way that’s hard to quantify, so if you’re bringing this up with them it’s for their benefit as well.

    If your sysadmins want, they can make a script that looks for the IPs Vimeo uses in regular intervals and adds them to a list. They can even be added straight to the whitelist.
