When I visit a plugin page it has the following info for example in the right column:

    Requires: 2.9 or higher
    Compatible up to: 3.4.1
    Last Updated: 2012-7-27
    Downloads: 24,565

What is the difference between “Requires” and “Compatible up to”. Say I have WordPress 3.1, it meets the required version, but not the compatible version. Rather confusing to figure out if the plugin will work as expected or not. Thank you in advance.

Requires: Do not use a version less than 2.9

Compatible up to: I have tested this to version 3.4.1 and it works.

Worst thing? The ‘compatible up to’ doesn’t really matter. If the plugin has been updated in the last year, it will most likely work. And even when it hasn’t many will still work!
