I’d like EVERYONE to have access to the entire blochcancer.net site but allow only registered users with a level 1 Role named “Volunteers” to have access to posts in a category named “Volunteers Only” and I can’t seem to accomplish that…

I am confounded, I think, by the many check boxes for roles, posts, categories, users — it is unclear to me how these interact in the plugin.

Everything I try seems to result in everyone but admins being restricted!

How should I (or can I) use Access Manager plugin to accomplish my aim?

I wish the plugin included a way to restrict (rather than allow) access by non-Volunteers to certain categories and pages.

Thanks so much for any help you can offer!

  • I am setting up a school site where I would like each instructor to have his own page in the site. The instructor should be able tocreate/edit/delete posts only from the page that belongs to him. I believe that this plugin should do the trick except I can’t seem to get it to work.

In my testing, I installed version 0.8.0.2 and copied the template.php file into the wp-admin directory as described. I then created a category for each user. I also created a user group for each user and assigned each its respective user. The problem is, the categories that I created do not show up so that I can assign them. The only category that I can assign is the one that existed before I installed the plugin. Also, when I login as one of the users, they have full access to all of the existing posts even though I did not assign that category to their user group.

Am I missing something or is it just not working correctly?

This will be a great plugin if I can get it to work.

    Thanks!

OK. I got a little bit further but its not working as desired. I discovered that if I add a post to the user’s category, then that category will show up on the admin screen so that I can assign it to the user’s group. Not quite ideal but I can live with it.

However, when I login as the user and try to create a post, it doesn’t give me any option to select a category (ie, the category list is empty) and I can only post to the site default category. It lets me post to the default category but that shouldn’t be allowed because I only gave access to the one user category.

Basically, I want to associate one user to one category so that that user can only post to that one category and nothing else. Additionally, that should be the default category for that user in case he doesn’t select a category when he creates the post. Does that make sense? Is this the right plugin to be able to do that?

    @nativepdx:

If I restrict a page will this plugin remove it(the page) from the menu for those users that are not authorized?

Yes, if you select the option “hide complete page”.

where can I modify the responses users get if they are not authorized to view the content?

At the page/post options. But the response is only given as you don’t hide a post/page.

    @glw:

Is this the right plugin to be able to do that?

I hope. ?? Your setting sounds very complex. I could be that there is a bug or something is configured wrong. If you give me a login I will see whats going on. If there is a bug I will do my best to fix it. You found my e-mail address at my blog or at the plugin page.

If you don’t give me more feedback I can’t do anything. Only saying that something won’t work for you is not enough information for me to decide if something is configured wrong or there is a bug. That happened many times. People wrote that the have a problem, but if I give an answer and ask for more informations they don’t talk to me anymore. For example mike gave me more informations (first he gave me access to his blog and then he send me a copy of his data, thanks so much) and I was able to find the problem and fix it.

    Hi Alex,

Great Plugin, looks like you updated today. I’ve started with a completely fresh install of wordpress but can’t seem to get an access group to save no matter what I do. This has only been confirmed on a yahoo small business server. We are on Yahoo hosting so I can’t access the database. We are being forced to switch plugins as this one appears to have been broken with today’s update. I know you probably can’t attest to the cause of my situation, but maybe you can assure that your latest release is a release candidate and does not have some silly bug in it that would prevent me from creating an access group?

Have you use a previous version of my plugin, if you do which version have you use? Does this version work correct? The problem is that you can’t create a user group, right?

Yeah we had a previous version, the version immediately before your latest release. I downloaded it last week. I think the problem was we started out with wordpress 2.6.1 or something (provided by yahoo default) and then upgraded once we started to have trouble. So we’re all mixed up and without access to the database. Clean installs don’t correct the issue of user groups not being saved/inserted. It does say “Group was added successfully.”, but no user group appears in the list. Hope that helps more.

I have released a new version in which the database creation will forced if it fails. I hope now it works. Please give me feedback.

    Hi Alex,

I really appreciate your working at this matter. Unfortunately your latest 9.1.1 release did not fix the issue of records not saving.

Please give me your email address I will make a function which erase old database entries and write the tables again. I will send them you by mail. If it works I will add this feature to the next release, if it don’t work we will find the problem. ??

Alex, I have a good feeling that this will do the trick.

Can you please send it to
    dylan (*at*) examp (*dot*) (*com*)?

    Thanks!

    Sent an email Alex ??

I am having difficulty ensuring my template images show up with the new update.

I’ve just deleted this Plug-in and Removed the tables. I’m still getting blocks on media (even as an Admin). Is there anyway to go back to original access settings??

TowJumper, uploaded files usually placed in “Upload/YYYY/MM” directory of your site if you didn’t change this parameter at the WP-settings. In this case UAM blocks files using .htaccess and .htpasswd config-files wich are placed at “Upload” dirctory.
Delete these config-files via any ftp-manager and you’ll be happy.

GM_Alex, firstly, thanks a lot for you work!
    wish you to achieve success!

i’d like to make clear the file lock oportunity on the UAM..
i didn’t try to look through your code and just want to ask you to tell what is the normal workflow of this process?

the only words i found about UAM file lock were:

That the username/password prompt comes is if you are using media files, you must update these post, because of the file locking, or deactivate the file locking at the settings! You can update them by removing the links to the files and add it again by using wordpress, the new link will generated automatically.

it’s not clear what does it mean the new link will generated automatically. ?

and what if my media files doesn’t attached to any post. for instance, i just want to show their links in sidebar and i need only registered users could download them.

one thing more… i figured out smth i can’t understand: one file wich is zip archive got the URL like https://mywpsite.com?getfile=30 .
and the second one (which is .doc file) – https://mywpsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/mydocfile.doc
moreover, the first link – works as it should, it let to download file to registered users only… but the second url- show the WP-file window prompt for login and password… and for the reason of the UAM setting “Use a random generated pass word.” as i guess.

i’ve got lost and have no idea about what is the principle of operation with file lock you implement into UAM.

    Thanks in advance
