plugin upgrade caused me to use a backup

3 times now I have wiped my site, loaded a backup, tested it to make sure all ran smooth. As soon as I reinstall the plugin (the most recent I downloaded straight from your site this morning) no pages will load and my only option is safe mode. Then I start all over by restoring from back up.
