    First let me say that the WordPress developers and the majority of plugin developers do an amazing job! All of this capability mostly for free? Incredible.

    Now to my comment. The messages regarding security and reminders to keep core and plugins updated are appropriate and appreciated. However, I have received some recent plugin “updates” that add no functionality or security patches, but include a shiny new add banner or popup. It takes time to test and install updates. If I decide to start passing on updates, the number in the red circle gets bigger and it’s really hard to keep track of things. I do appreciate that developers have to make a living. Please, ask me for a donation or offer a premium version, but don’t ask me to upgrade solely for marketing purposes.

    I recommend review those plugins and leave such message there (i.e., plugin’s page).

    That’s not really a WordPress complaint as much as some plugins do things you don’t like. Which is fine, but don’t call them out here.

    Call them out on their own support forum or leave a review for that plugin as t-p indicated.

    Thanks for your responses. Yes, I have left feedback for the plugin developers.

    My intention was to raise awareness that I am seeing a trend that seems to be taking advantage of the push to keep plugins updated.

    I’m a bit surprised that this is not seen as a WordPress issue. WordPress publishes Detailed Plugin Guidelines Detailed Plugin Guidelines Item 11 is quite explicit about Advertising. I’m simply suggesting that adding a simple sentence to Item 11 that states something to the effect that releasing updates for the sole purpose of advertising or marketing are strongly discouraged. Thank You.
