I have upgraded to the latest wordpress version.

When I want to update my plugins through wordpress (with the ftp), I am suddenly getting the following message:

PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 130968 bytes) in /srv/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 159, referer: ...

Needless to say that I have tested increasing the wordpress/php memory limit to 512M and the problem still persists. Plus, wordpress should never need to use so much for updating a plugin.

Would this be a bug? Any ideas?
