    Hi,

I’m about to install this plugin but I have a concern, which is this: "Rate limit exceeded. Clients may not make more than 150 requests per hour."

The website is going to have a huge traffic inside a university (which everyone would have the same external IP address, yes?) and the error might happen more often. Does this plugin solve that issue?

    Thanks!

The plugin will only ever make 12 API calls per unique widget per hour. A unique widget is one with different settings. So two widgets following the same user with the same settings only count as one unique widget.

So if you have 5 copies of the widget all following different Twitter accounts, it will make 60 requests per hour no matter how many pageviews you have.

I’m sorry, I’m not fully understanding that. I only have one widget that gets feeds from only one Twitter account. If the university’s network reach up to 500 page views per hour, it would still have 12 API requests and would never reach the limit? So I won’t be expecting an error… ever?

Also, is there a way to use Twitter’s authentication?

    Thanks!

So your widget will never make more than 12 calls per hour (one every 5 minutes). If other sites hosted on the same IP make more than 138 calls per hour to Twitter you will go over limit. However, the widget caches the response from Twitter and doesn’t get rid of it until it makes another successful request, so if you’ve gone over limit it’s not going to break. It just won’t be able to get new tweets (will still display the ones it has) until it can successfully make another request.

The widget does not currently support authenticating with Twitter. I plan to add that support at some point, but I don’t have a timeline yet.

Okay then, thanks for the reply! I hope you get it to support authentication soon and good luck with your plugin! Great plugin, btw.

Reply to Aarons remark – Twitter Widget Pro will only ever make 12 API calls per hour.

I have 2 websites both running Twitter Widget Pro – same settings but following 2 different twitter accounts. Both use API calls at the same rate in unison ( I watch them count up on 2 different screens ) – both make 150 API calls in approx. 10 mins.

Then when I wait 50 more mins for the counter to reset, both make the same rate of API calls again – approx. 150 calls in 10 mins.

So what gives? Why is my Twitter Widget Pro (2.4.1)make so many?
The way it runs now, both NEVER pick up my twitter posts because they are maxed out and waiting for the 50 mins to run out.

    Thanks
