• After updating to WP 3.3, I was excited to see this plugin available as an importer. Up to now, I was using feedwordpress to import my tumblr posts.

Unfortunately, I’ve run into a few problems. The first being that after the first run and successfully importing posts, it won’t grab any new ones, giving me the error Problem communicating with Tumblr, retrying later. I know cron is working fine since I have feedwordpress running as a cron task as well.

Secondly, posts with any kind of formatting can come across odd. For example, I will often include an anchor tag in my quote source, linking to the original material. This comes across in the title of the post on wordpress and shows up as a horribly mangled title. Also, images come through with the post content in the caption, which doesn’t handle markup and often truncates at the first sign of an apostrophe.

Has anyone else run into these issues or figured out work-arounds? I’ve managed to edit the plugin to place the quote source in the post content (and not the title) and removed the title, forcing the plugin to take the first 100 characters of the quote as the title. But I’m having trouble everywhere else. For now, I just have to stick with feedwordpress.

It’s an importer, not a feed reader. It won’t continually run and import new posts.

The purpose of importers is for people wanting to migrate, not for people wanting to crosspost.

And there’s no much we can do about Tumblr’s horrible HTML. It basically just duplicates what they send.

I appreciate the clarification. I’m still a bit confused as to why there’s cron settings in the plugin if it’s only meant to run once. And as far as the malformed titles, it’s not that the HTML is bad, it’s that the HTML is passed to WP’s title field, yielding a title like “Some Person” To clear that up in future versions, it might help to strip HTML from anything that’s going into the title field.

Edit: Another thing I’ve noticed is that if a video doesn’t have a description, the URL of the video is used as the title. Not sure what would help there.

The cron is to let it run until it’s finished importing the posts, since it can’t import them all at once.

And HTML is allowed in post titles, so I’m not sure why that would be a particular problem?
