The system works based on a wp-cron job, so the amount of time it takes depends on the amount of traffic to the site. Basically, hits to the site cause the import process to start up again once a minute, if the site is being hit. So refresh it every so often.

Is it normal to have to wait three days, though?? This kinda ruins it for me!

It’s not really about the amount of time that it takes. It can’t run when it’s not called upon to run.

See, the plugin can only fire up when somebody visits the site. So if nobody is actually visiting the site, then it’ll never fire and you’ll be waiting forever.

Visit the site once every minute or so and it’ll fire off again and import more posts. It’s a continuous process. It runs for 30 seconds, then waits 30 seconds, then somebody else has to visit the site to make it run. It’s one of those things that will eventually finish, but the already imported posts are visible immediately, so most people don’t notice.

Ok… Stupid system, if you ask me. Noone visits the address, because it’s not my official address yet, so I am basically the only one hitting it at the moment…

You say that I have to visit once every minute and it’ll import more posts… Kinda weird that it hasn’t imported a single one yet, though…

Well, if it’s not importing anything, then that’s kind of a bug instead, isn’t it? I’d need more information to debug it.

Email me directly with your tumblr account info so I can try to figure out what’s wrong.

The tumblr importer had the wrong password in this case. Hit the clear account info button, put in the correct credentials, restarted the import, and it works.

I have a question, once imported, how do you handle the images? they are just links to tumblr images.
    thanks

The importer will attempt to sideload (import) uploaded images in as normal WordPress attachments, but this doesn’t always work. Images that are linked to elsewhere or which are not uploaded to your own account can’t be imported. They’re just links, not “attachments”.

So for those, you might want to manually get them off of tumblr and upload them to your site.

Hum, so far, the importer imported 1 post in 24 hours, the image that was originally uploaded on Tumblr is only linked.

On an earlier message, you mention “See, the plugin can only fire up when somebody visits the site. So if nobody is actually visiting the site, then it’ll never fire and you’ll be waiting forever.”
Are you saying someone must visit the new website in order for the plugin to work? That’d mean a site that’s in maintenance mode would never fire up the imports? Are we talking just visit the site, any post or posts that’s been importer through the plugin?

A suggestion would be to add, right from the start, an option in the importer to choose a category on which the posts are going to be stored.

    thanks.

Somebody has to visit the site and cause WordPress to run. If WordPress isn’t running, then it obviously can’t do anything. There’s a Refresh link in the upper left corner of the importer. Click it and you’ll see the numbers change. This also fires WordPress, and lets the importer run too.

This isn’t like a program running on your computer. It’s a website. Websites don’t do anything until they get a request to do something. The whole wp-cron process is based around the idea of taking actions when the site gets traffic. No traffic = no actions taken.

If you think it’s stuck, then clear the information in the importer, using the button provided for just that purpose, and start it up again. It won’t re-import posts, so you won’t get duplicates.

If you want to add categories, then just use the built in bulk editor in WordPress to add categories to all the posts at once.

    Thanks for the advice.
Actually, I think what prevented the import was that my site was in “maintenance mode”.
But it worked, imported 900 posts in less than one hour.
    Thanks!!

Hum, ok one thing that’s a REAL problem…

After I finished importing some 900 posts from my Tumblr, they all appeared on my backend with the default category (blog).

When I batch changed the category to something else, I discovered that WordPress doesn’t let you change the category when you batch. At best you can add a category, but you can’t take one off. Have you experienced this?

So far the only way to change the category is to quick edit each post! arf, it’s going to be a long one.

I can’t guarantee this solution will work with the latest WP, but here you go:
