Plugin to count words in category?

  • I would like a word count for a particular category – a combined total for all posts in that category. There are plugins that will show the word count for a particular post, or the number of posts in a category, but this isn’t quite what I need.

    A Google search turned up reference to a plugin called “Category Word Count”, but it isn’t around anymore.

    Is there a plugin that will do this and I am overlooking it? Or, is there a function I could add to my theme (or similar) to return this information?

    Alternatively, a way to get the total word count for a tag would work. What is described in this support thread would be perfect – if I could get it to work.

    I’ve tried putting the code from that response into the tag template for a child theme of Twenty Twelve and I either “break” the template or I get no change what-so-ever to the output. It’s like the new code isn’t even there.

    Ideally, I would like to be able to have a sidebar widget that showed the number of posts in a specified category/tag and the total word count for that category/tag.

    Anyone? I started to learn php just to do this, but is that really necessary? Surely this isn’t that odd of a question. Google seaches every which way from Sunday only cover total number of words on the blog, or the number of words in a single post.

    Is it even possible to get a total word count for a single category?

    I would be greatly interested in this function too, but have not so far been able to find a php script or plugin that does this.
