  • I’ve officially removed myself from Shane’s moocher list by purchasing the pro version. Lots of new and exciting features but it didn’t solve any of the upgrade problems. Heckuva way to sell plugins. Insert premature update release in the loop without ample notice that the update changes content/paths from regular posts to custom post taxonomies. The Event Calendar 2.0 is a new plugin not an upgrade. It should not have been pushed through the loop unless clearly communicated that it was a major update.

I purchase and support a lot of plugins, themes, etc. I get what you say, Shane. I’ve worked for free or little support as well. Let me give you an example: What value do I give my client when my work is fixing someone’s premature release motivated to sell an addon? Not much and I don’t bill for time without value.

    Moochers work in mysterious ways.

    Hey eworldlinx.

Pro is just additional features. It doesn’t “fix” anything that people might have wrong in core. I see people write that a lot in the last couple days and no matter how often I say it, people still get that impression. I’m not sure how to make it any clearer but I would love advice if you have some insight.

As for a premature release, you have no idea how much QA we did on 2.0. It was far from pre-mature. We understand that not all upgrades will go smoothly and we are here to help. With 100k+ themes in this world, and custom code on top of that, perfect integration is impossible.

As for notice, we have put one everywhere that we can. There was an update coming soon notice every month in the forum for the last few months. The home page of the plugin has had a notice for 3 months. We can’t let you know from the old plugin because we don’t have access to that code. I hear your frustration, but trust me in the fact that we are working this from every angle we have access to.

I’ll head over to https://tri.be/support/forums/topic/events-list-vs-calendar/#post-9877 to help you with the upgrade. =)

Personally I was checking the www.remarpro.com page so I knew this was coming.

But on the auto-update side, couldn’t you simply have pushed into the auto-update feed a 1.6x update whose ONLY change was a big banner inviting people to download the new version?

(Perhaps your problem with that approach would be that you would be creating a separate project.)

We debated that Bwp. It is a great question. We didn’t want to fork to a new project. I we didnt branch, it would only have covered those users who updated within the 2-3 week period that covered, which isn’t the bulk of users. Most people upgrade infrequently.

We are building an alert system into the next release that overlaps with 3.3 so that we can use pointers to handle this in the future. Live and learn. =)

Shane, I am buying Pro as soon as I get approval from the board I work for. It seems too good of a deal to pass up and with reoccuring events, you can’t beat that. I still have one question to ask, and I didn’t get it answered in another thread. I realize you are busy and don’t have time to coddle. I appreciate it in advance and admit this whole mess was my fault by not turning off auto-update.

However, I can’t figure out why my old posts under 1.6.x can’t transfer over. They are all still there under my posts. Still as “events” category. But yet, no migrate data has appeared nor can I find a way to do it in either settings or the events tab. I watched all the videos I could and nothing. If I just have to re-enter, fine, and I’ll start but I’d appreciate any thoughts.

    Thanks again,

    Andy

    @akravetz,

Thats odd. Any chance you can send us a copy of your db so we can take a look? email to [email protected]. Not sure how quickly we can turn it around but I’d like to see if we can figure out why that isn’t migrating.

Thanks. I have downgraded for now back down to 1.6.5 but plan on building a new site within a few months. I am going to use TEC Pro plus 2.0 on that new version of our Web site. I could try to get you the database. I don’t mind that. I’ll see what I can do.

Seriously, thanks for all your help. Even though I still downgraded, the fact that you took time to help me, an idiot when it comes to this, made the decision to use the fee-based version an easy one when we go with the new version. Quality person, you are my friend. Thanks.

    Andy
