• I have a News category that has over 160 posts that are not events. When I migrated my events to The Events Calendar 2.0 a couple of events have an Events Calendar category of News. I unchecked News for those posts and now want to remove the News events category. If I do that, will I lose the 160+ posts in my News category that are not events? Are these two News categories the same or different?

    How do Events Categories work?

In would be extremely helpful to have a good description of The Events Calendar 2.0 functionality so we do not have to ask such questions.

Thanks for a great plugin! (Though the migration to 2.0 felt a little brutal).

  • Yes handsome is right.

If you can’t 301 redirect or are unsure how to do that then you really shouldn’t release a new product.

Its got no value if nobody can find it. Regardless of how cool the features may be. Right now this plugin is hella destructive and in my opinion… It ought to be removed until a more complete plugin is released.

I’d also encourage you to make your plugin compatible with google XML sitemaps. Thats a plugin most WordPress users use to generate sitemaps.

Thanks for the notes here, guys. Up until reading this thread today, I haven’t received reports from any users that they’ve had problems with Google upon upgrading. Would be good to hear anyone else’s experience on this.

On the XML sitemaps front – we’ve got that on the radar for 2.1.

    Hey Rob,

I’m not sure why nobody has reported it but I can probably be helpful.

Basically, with the plugin migrating to custom post types you are migrating the actual event to a new permalink structure. Because of this it will have a new URL.

The problem is that without a redirect to the new URL Google and the search engines will drop the content from their indexes as ‘404 unknown’ and reevaluate the ranking process negatively.

Even if creating the content elsewhere its a good idea to let the search engines know that content has moved. If the events were to keep the same urls as the original posts (before migrating) then this would be of no consequence and 301 rediects would not be needed.

Thank you mykkal, that was simple and actually makes sense to me.

I guess what’s weird is why they would change the URLs at all during migration. Could the 301s be inserted during the regular TEC 2.x migration tool, or would higher level webmaster modifications be required (e.g. htacess)?

This is great – thanks for the heads up, mykkal. I’ve logged this as an issue for 2.1 so we can make sure it gets addressed ASAP. Apologies about the inconvenience in the interim.

Very happy to help. Good luck.

Kind of weird how you can’t subscribe to a thread without commenting on it, eh?
