We’ve been using the Title-to-tags original plugin for many years now on multiple websites. Recently the plugin requested auto update, though no update was really needed. The plugin has been working with no problems for years.

Title-to-tags is NOT doing what is supposed to after the update – namely saving the title as tags. What happened after the plugin/title-to-tags URL takeover? Will this be corrected so we can use the great title-to-tags again?

    Hello, Bibliata!

I’m so glad you’ve gotten great use out of the plugin! My apologies for the interruption, but because I wanted the plugin to be able to handle multiple post types and taxonomies (not just tags), some adjustments needed to be made.

For a start, the plugin file changed names, so that means it was deactivated during update. Again, sorry! But in order to adhere to WordPress Core coding standards (which didn’t exist when this plugin was first developed), it had to be done. Please reactivate the plugin.

Secondly, have a look at the “writing” page under “Settings.” Here, you will find a list of active post types and their associated taxonomies. Simply select the correct settings for your needs.

I suppose at minimum, I ought to default to saving tags for posts. But that was an oversight on my part which I can correct for future releases.

TO ALL VISITORS OF THIS FORUM TOPIC: Please have a look at the new README for directions working with T2TU.

Thank you for the quick Re:
However the plugin does NOT work

Even after revisiting and saving the settings, no tags are added to posts
Additionally, several of our WP installations return: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘[‘ in www/news/wp-content/plugins/title-to-tags/Library/class-core.php on line 75

Please, revert to the previous working version until this errors are cleared

Please see the repository to download an older version of the plugin. I’m not getting that error message, so I’ll need to investigate further.

What version of PHP are you using?

We have been running the plugin on 40-50 websites.
It was perhaps the only plugin working with no problems for many years.
Now, we need to delete, upload on each site individually to revert
    – Plugin does not work on older php?
    – on new php version, the plugin does not work either
    – on non-English WP installs, the plugin settings page does not even show

Who needed all that? The plugin was working fine…

Time passes, my friend. Nobody needs it, but that’s just what happens. And this plugin badly needed updating, even if it’s update has inconvenienced you.

I wish you could be more constructive, rather than using a public forum just to vent. You are talking to a developer that gave you a plugin you’ve used for “40-50 websites” – “for years” – FOR FREE. Part of that transaction is the understanding that debugging is part of your role as consumer. I can absolutely cop to the problems you’ve discovered. I can fix those problems for the people who want my work. You in turn will need to make a decision about whose work you want to incorporate into what I suspect you most likely get paid to do.

It’s not venting but lamenting over another good plugin that has gone down the drain

The title-to-tag plugin has been greatly appreciated as one of the few that worked for years with NO problem – simply amazing. Why fix something that was not broken is beyond us.

    The problems were already mentioned:

    – following your instructions: Settings, Writing, Save settings => no tags recorded even after that

    – {apparently} on older PhP installs, plugin returns the error mentioned above

    – on non English websites in Settings there is no trace of the plugin settings //could provide snapshots if needed

How do we fix that in one simple update?
Again, no one would have made a big deal if the plugin was useless.

But because it has been running strong and with no problems for years, it comes as a great surprise that it was modified. Actually, we were even thinking the plugin was abandoned (WP said no update for years) and someone took over its pretty WP URL – hence the take over thread…

Furthermore, when WP upgraded to 4.9 a month ago, several virus tools namely Gotmls and Wordfence Security reported malicious code in the plugin. They both insisted the plugin code was old and should be removed — Hope all this info helps //THANKS

Ok. So I’m checking things over and:
    – I’ve been able to successfully configure and get T2TU to work for a clean install of WordPress.
    – Using PHP 5.4.45 through 7.2, I do not see any error messages in log files or on the screen.
    – I’ve changed the language of the clean installed site and the T2TU configuration options are still visible.

I’m not going to be much help without a little info. What version of PHP are you running? What version of WP? Have you tried switching themes/moving plugin files to troubleshoot?

    Thread Starter bibliata

    (@bibliata)

Confirmed: current version does NOT work on older php {perhaps a depreciated operator} Now, pls tell us how to compare to a clean install as all of existing sites are not clean installs neither is the upgrade on top of older version of the plugin?

You could start by turning off all plugins and going back to a WordPress theme. But of course, I can understand why you would not do this on a production site.

If you have a development environment you could use, I’d suggest starting there.
