Plugin suitable for community group to upload / search for / display items

I am helping a newly started local history group

They want a facility for members to be able to upload photos, images of maps etc (visual items) into a database, and these be searchable by categories (dates, locations, types etc).

Suitable plugins are difficult to find because web search terms such as Archive, Collection, Database, Repository all return hits about WordPress itself rather than about plugins that help provide a resource about uploaded items.

Please could I have suggestions for plugins? (Although I am supporting a local history group, I suspect that the requirements could be similar for many other interests as well).

It sounds like the terms you are looking for are how to add advanced search or faceted search functionality to your website. From the top of my head, I know of FacetWP. It’s a paid plugin, so if it’s out of your budget, Search & Filter might be an alternative.

You can use terms like “advanced search WordPress plugin” or “faceted search WordPress plugins” to find more alternatives.
