Plugin suggestions for user groups

  • Im attempting to decide if I should use WP as my front-page or if I should code my own that uses my phpbb forum as a base. What I need to accomplish is a site/page that will allow certain members to become what Ill call ‘writers’. The writers will post blogs/news/events for their area(aka group). I want the members to be able to select only what areas they want to be able to see.
    Im initially drawn to Role Scoper. Will this accomplish my needs or should I consider staying with only phpbb and making my own frontend?
