Updates should not have removed your settings unless your deleted the old version first.

It’s also wise to make sure you have a good backup before upgrading anything – core and plugins.

Yes, I realized later that I had had to make modifications to the PHP code, not the CSS code, because we’re not given options for what the form will look like – text, field value, button styling. And no, the “class” specification in the widget not only didn’t help, it wouldn’t have accomplished everything I needed.

I had to add a class tag into the button code, and manually hunt for and change the input field and button texts – changes which, of course, disappeared with the upgrade. At least an hour of work, since I didn’t remember exactly how I did it last time. Fortunately, I figured it out.
