Great plugin! I need to make a donation – will do soon! Is there a way to get it to generate a more salient message than “Please enter a correct email address” upon rejecting a registration? E.g., “Your registration was rejected because your email or IP address was identified as being associated with Spam. If this is incorrect, please email the Admin.” If not, it would be a very useful added feature. I discovered this upon trying to do a test registration and being rejected. Also, upon being rejected, I learned that it was rejecting me due to a bad cached IP, which was different than the IP from which I was registering. I did not recognize the IP. Any idea what was causing this?

  • The plugin is operating at a much deeper level. The plugin hooks a function that WordPress uses to validate all email addresses, no matter where they are entered. This function is called at a dozen places in WordPress. If I find a spammer, I return a blank email. At the time I do that, I don’t have the opportunity to display a message.

Since the rejection takes place deep in the guts of WordPress, there is no way to respond.

I realize that this is a drawback, but then, why would you want to be helpful to the spammers trying to get on your site? They already know that they are spammers, so apologizing to them makes no sense.

For the very few incorrect rejections, a simple note near the email field would explain the problem. I am considering adding a “Protected by …” option to the plugin to sit on forms that use email, if it is possible.

I don’t know why you had a bad IP address. It is quite possible that you are using a proxy or firewall that uses a different IP than the one that appears in your IPCONFIG.

Thank you Keith for your great plugin and for your in-depth response.

I am going to release the next version in a few days. This one stops wordpress with an access denied message when it detects spam. I have added a dozen new features, and rewritten most of the plugin from the ground up.
