• this plugin looks exactly like what I need but I am very put off by the fact that many features are available only with the PRO version, which is 15$/year a fact that is not advertised anywhere in the plugin description, if I missed that, please point it out to me.

Usually I do not mind paying for “good” plugins but I hate it if the payment is hidden from a user until he installs and configures a plugin ??

does anyone know of a free alternative to this plugin?

Two thumbs up Ovidiu! Not sure why I couldn’t find the share and follow plugin, but after getting very annoyed with this buy PRO crap on social slider, I searched free alternative to social slider, and bam, here I landed.

Look, I can understand authors need to make $, but this is WordPress, and I’m getting sick of these plugins not fully-functioning without paying. I don’t know how many times I’ve hit the donate button and dropped $50-$100 on an author after finishing a project b/c their plugin made my life that much easier. But this shadiness… just isn’t right.

Thanks man, great call! And frankly I like the share and follow plugin much better.

    you#re welcome.
to be honest, I didn’t need that many social networks, just about 4 so I hand-coded and styled it myself…. added a few divs with the right icons, floated them left, position fixed, that it.

I’ve actually paid for the pro version of this plug-in but the amount and frequency of updates gets on my nerves! There’s almost a new one every week!

@ovidiu care to share your code?

I made a very simple version: coded some divs containing links to my FB account, twitter links etc, then floated it i.e. to the left and gave it a fixed position. works great.

question regarding adding new images / networks to menu.

directions say to place image files “wp-content/social-slider-2/ ” though there is no folder called socialslier2 in wp-content, does he mean wp-content/plugins/social-slider-2?

secondly do i not place the images in the icons folder? within wp-content/plugins/social-slider-2? if someone could clarify the exact place to put them ide appreciate it. lastly if i name the site “ustream” is this the format for naming image. ustream_1301499480-20.png ?

    thanks

    Create the folder in wp-content.

Each time you load the options page in the admin area, I think it creates a new unique icon file name. Use that name shown and ONLY that name. Do not prefix anything onto it..

The developer said there should be a new version out soon and we might be able to use custom icons. (or replace current icons) which is a big deal for me as the included icons aren’t very good. Especially FB and Twitter…

    ok so wp-content/social-slider-2/ustream_1301500906-20.png & wp-content/social-slider-2/ustream_1301500906-32.png

im pretty savvy, but im having one of those days.

?? I know the feeling. The files need to be named exactly as shown on the page.

_1301509017-20.png icon of the site, size 20px
_1301509017-32.png icon of the site, size 32px
    (example from my site)

    So nothing before the underscore.

As I mentioned above, I think it regenerates the code each time the page loads so it you are trying “again” you may need to rename your files to whatever is new on the page that time..

    UPDATE:
Just checked and it does create a new code each time you load the page. So double check your file names.
    That help?

i got it! i posted up some instructions.

I am pretty savvy yet your instructions were difficult. I did a small rendition of my own. Maybe you could upload them, or edit them

In order to add custom icons / other networking services aside form the ones i supplied follow these steps very carefully.

    1. resize the icon you wish to use into 2 dimensions. 32×32 and 20×20. make sure to save it as a .png

    2. create a folder, if one wasn’t created already in the wp-content folder on your web server named “social-slider-2”

the directory structure should be /blogname/wp-content/social-slider-2/

    3. on social slider options page where it gives you directions on how to “add new site” it lists a string of characters like this “_1301511554-20.png.” copy
only the _1301511554 and rename the images you just copied to your file server adding the “-20 and -32” on each of the two images, depending on which is the 20×20 and 32×32.

What is key to understand here is everytime you refresh your options page that string of number changes so its important you are aware of the numbers and what corresponds to what on your file server.

    4. Once you have named the images the string of numbers, you go to “Name of site dialog box” and input the “_1301511554″ (minus the ” ” and -20/-34″

    5. Lastly you can now rename the service above where all the other icons / services are and then repeat.
