• I have this plugin for one reason, and it works well for it: To make covers clickable/linkable.

But when writing a new post in the block editor, everything is slowed to a crawl. I type a sentence, and then watch it finish onscreen letter by letter for a few seconds. I also see little h2/h3/etc tags behind elements, but that’s merely irritating, not important.

The problem disappears when I deactivate the plugin, but then the covers on my home page are not clickable anymore (too bad the established links don’t stick around). At the moment, I deactivate while writing a post, but that won’t be acceptable anymore once I get some visitors to my site.

I almost can’t imagine a plugin conflict since I have almost no plugins except for this one, Yoast, Siteground Optimizer, and ContactForm 7.

Is this a known issue? Is there a fix?

Thanks and have a nice day.

  • Hi @rodario – thanks for reporting this. We haven’t heard this from other users. Unless you have a LOT of blocks on a page (100+), then you shouldn’t see a noticeable affect on the editor’s performance.

Have you tried disabling any of the EditorsKit features to see if there is one feature in particular that is causing this slowdown? You can see this list by going to settings –> EditorsKit –> Features Manager from wp-admin.

I also see little h2/h3/etc tags behind elements, but that’s merely irritating, not important.

These tags can be removed by disabling the Heading Block Label feature under Writing.

Hi Chris, Thanks for your reply

I counted the blocks in one of the affected posts, and it comes out to 28, including some images, a gallery, several tables, some with links. Also a three column layout if that makes a difference.

That’s still a short post though. Considering each paragraph is its own block (which I hate, as I still hate many things about Gutenberg), it would be easy to reach 100 blocks on a longer post.

To save time, I wanted to first disable all features except the ones I want instead of going one by one, and… I couldn’t find the feature that enables covers to have links.

So just out of curiosity, and in case I missed my desired feature on the list, I disabled ALL features and two interesting things happened:

    1. The cover-link feature was still working on my homepage, so that setting is missing from the settings list. Maybe another setting, the culprit, is too?

    2. The editor was still exactly as slow as before, though the features were clearly successfully deactivated (no h2 tags behind titles anymore, for example).

Just to be sure, I deactivated the plugin again, and that made the editor as responsive as it should be. Turn it back on, and it’s back to a crawl.

I also updated to the newest version, without effect.

I also disabled the typography addon.

So the only thing left would be the blocks management, but disabling all blocks doesn’t do me any good and there is no setting for disabling the management feature itself.

PS: The problems start before adding any text or images to the center column, from the beginning of the empty template post. Maybe one of the blocks in the “sidebars” is causing the issue?

PPS: I started with an empty page (and all features still disabled) and there’s a slight stutter from the very beginning and some real pronounced lag after maybe five blocks.

Thanks for following up with the additional detail @rodario. It’s helpful as we try to reproduce this and debug.

    Can you please share:
    * The list of plugins you have activated
    * Which theme you are using
    * What version of WordPress you are running

You can respond to this thread or feel free to email this info to [email protected]. Whichever is easier for you.

    Thanks!

    Sure thing:

    Plugins:

    – Contact Form 7
    – GDPR Cookie Consent
    – Gutenberg Blocks and Template Library by Neve theme
    – Jetpack, MC4WP: Mailchimp for WordPress
    – SiteGround Central
    – SiteGround Optimizer
    – SiteGround Security
    – Wordfence Security
    – WordPress Importer
    – Yoast Duplicate Post
    – Yoast SEO

    Theme: Neve

    WP: 5.8.1

It occurs to me I could deactivate all other plugins and see if the problem persists, then hunt down the responsible one if it doesn’t.

I’ll try this later today after I finish the current post and do a backup.

Well, that was a short test.

I disabled all plugins except Editor’s Kit, and the Editor is crawling with the plugin on, fine with the plugin off.

So, incompatible with Neve? It’s a fairly popular theme.. Or maybe with Firefox? Though that doesn’t make much sense.

Hi @rodario – we’ve done some testing on our end and still aren’t able to reproduce the issue you’re describing. We’ve installed Neve, added blocks, and the editor still performs fine in all browsers.

If you have a chance, would you mind switching to the Twenty Twenty One theme temporarily to see if the editor performance issue still persists? If not, that would narrow the problem down to Neve and we can continue testing different scenarios there.

Thanks for your help in getting to the bottom of this.

    Hi @clubkert

I tried it with 2021 and it’s the same: All plugins disabled: Normal editor responsiveness. All plugins except EditorsKit enabled: Normal editor responsiveness. Only EditorsKit enabled: editor is crawling.

Also, since the last update my chosen settings don’t stick anymore. All the disabled features are back and won’t stay disabled.

Another problem with the block editor crawling.
Kadence Theme with Pro Extensions, WordPress 5.8.2

After selectively deactivating and reactivating plugins I found what appears to be a conflict between EditorsKit and Real Media Library.

When both of those plugins are activated, the editor crawls.
When I deactivate either one of them, the editor works normally.

I haven’t tried selectively disabling components of EditorsKit

    Hey @adriandw

Thank you for providing more info. Although we have not yet been able to reproduce the issue on our end, I will make sure to keep an eye on this.

I would also like to assure you that we plan to dig deep into how we can improve the performance overall for the plugin, it is on our top priority list.

    Will keep you updated.

    Cheers,
    Munir

I am having the same problem.
    I type Vietnamese.
Disabling EditorsKit does significantly improve responsiveness when typing.
