[Plugin: Redirection] set up redirects in advance of new site going live?

  • I am building a new wordpress site to replace an old html site. The site-in-development is on a subdirectory of the root folder where the existing site is. Just wondering if there is a way to set up the redirects in advance of the site going live, but not actually activate them until it does go live?

    (I can’t see a way to get into the Settings area to set all the redirects up without the plugin being activated – which I presume will mean that the redirects will be in force?)

  • I prepare my redirects in advance in a CSV file, then upload when ready

    what exactly do you put on the csv file? is there a way to see an example? thanks ?? bless bless

    you’ll need to test this a little, and I am FAR from being expert on this subject, but the CSV headers are super simple source target
    the plugin is relative to site it is on so what that means is

    source would be something like /category/oldpost/ instead of https://yourdomain.com/category/oldpost/ while the target can be either /category/newpost/ or https://otherdomain.com/category/newpost/

    I hit a memory limit at about 500 urls per upload – so if you have gargantuan site you will need to divide it up into a few CSV files

    you should test of course, for the test the URL probably doesn’t even have to be real — just browse to it and it should send you to target page.

    of course using a CSV/excel file would make it easy to sort etc by adding fields, just don’t upload them in your final file

    How to not actually activate redirects:
    Click on ‘Groups’ –> ‘edit group’ –> uncheck option ‘Enabled’
