• I’m in the process of setting up a podcast on my WordPress site, and I need some clarification about the interaction between PodPress and FeedBurner.

From what I can tell, when you install PodPress it alters your basic RSS feed so that it includes the media enclosures on each page that has and MP3 embedded on it. If you then use the FD Feedburner Plugin you can redirect your feed to FeedBurner. At this point you can use the FeedBurner feed and submit it to sites like iTunes and it will pick up the information from the enclosures and disregard any other non-podcast related posts from the blog. Is this correct?

If everything above is correct, then my main question at this point is this: should you enable FeedBurner’s “SmartCast” feature, or should you just leave the feed as it is, since the relevant enclosures should already be embedded from PodPress? If you do enable SmartCast will it interfere with the enclosures that you already have set up through PodPress?

Any help with these questions would be appreciated, as I can’t seem to find much information about the interaction between PodPress and FeedBurner and how to configure the two properly.

    The first part is correct.
In addtion to that podPress produces also a completely new RSS feed which contains only posts with podPress attachments (www.example.com/?feed=podcast). But you can deactivate it if you don’t like it.
Furthermore I can say that iTunes (the Store as well as the client software) takes only the posts with enclosure from a news feed and ignores the other ones.

I don’t use Feedburner. That is why I can’t answer the second and 3rd question.

If you are using Feedburner then be aware that under some circumstances Feedburner stores your feed in a cache memory. That is no problem. But changes in your original feed might not immediately be visible in the Feedburner version. (I believe there is a way to clear that cache memory and update this version.)

    Thank you Tim!

In case anyone else comes across this thread, so far the Feedburner feed seems to be working fine without turning on “SmartCast” in Feedburner, although I’ve only only been using it for a couple of days. I’m still not sure if it would have a positive or negative effect on the feed if I turned SmartCast on, although I suspect that it isn’t necessary if you are already using PodPress.
