• First, let me apologize if this is a redundant thread. I’ve looked through a dozen other threads, but none mimic my issue or have any suggested solution.

When I upload an image and have it generate a thumbnail, the ‘Create new thumbnails’ window pops up with the status bar denoting how far along the thumbnail generation is. Then the status bar disappears and the windows just sits there with the ‘Create new thumbnails’ message. Nothing else happens – no errors occur. I have to manually exit the window.

Now I’m looking at my gallery and there are no thumbnails next to the items. The thumbnail column is simply empty. I can click on the individual item and click ‘Edit thumb’ and the proper image shows up with the cropping tool. I crop and click ‘Update’ and it says ‘Thumbnail updated’. I then exit that window and there’s still no thumbnail in the thumbnail column. The actual thumbnails do no show on the webpage either; however, the slider works perfectly.

I’ve tried changing all of the settings for the thumbnails in the options. I have nextGEN Gallery fully up-to-date (1.7.3 as of 1/24/11). I’ve tested on Chrome, Firefox 3.6 & 4, IE8 & 9, and haven’t had any luck with the thumbnails working. It is important to note that the very first time I installed nextGEN Gallery that the thumbnails did work. I ended up deleted the aforementioned gallery and haven’t had luck getting thumbnails to work since. I’ve reinstalled the plugin as well. I’m using the Green Stimulus theme… maybe there are compatibility issues?

I eagerly await your opinion on this issue. Thank you.

  • I have found that the images may be too large. Uploaded 20 images, but 5 would not make thumbs. Reducing the size of the images allowed them to make thumbs.

I think it is a result of the host. The memory may not be enough to handle the conversion of the larger images.

You might need to also check with your hosting server. Some servers have php safe mode activated and if it is your thumbs will not generate.

Your hosting provider would have to disable it.

I also have the thumbnail problem. They are simply not being created at all. i.e. the thumbnail directory remains empty. I am running the latest version of the plugin and wordpress. I’m using Bluehost hosting and wondered if anyone else may have the same problem. Tried multiple times to delete the gallery and reupload, regenerate thumbs etc. Nothing works. Thanks for any help.

just in case for anyone else , it woks in this way :

    1. resize your actual picture that want to uploade in your gallery , you can resize in ACDsee on Manage/ batch/ resize and you can select more picture at the same time and resize’it at 800 – 600 , or in Photoshoop , I recomend Acdsee ,
    2. then you can upload to your gallery and will create thumbnails automaticaly , and the main windows in java scrips will loaded at 100 % the dissapear

    3. don’t forget to thanks me ??

I have been using this pluging for several months now and after a few issues were worked out it’s been running great. Today, I am tring to upload images into a new directory and the thumbnails will not generate……
The last upload I did was last week no problem….
    No changes were made…
    No new plugins were added…

    I dont get it….

I checked the directory and under thumbnails nothing there …
I went to manage gallery and tried a bulk create new thumbnail and nothing happens….

If I select recover on the image itself in manage gallery, the thumbnail will create….

    I cant do this for a 300 plus upload…..

I tried uploading images with a size of 800px long side and still nothing

I runing the latest version of WP and NGG…..

Any help or ideas would be appreciated

    Thanks

    1. Make sure the folder you are trying to upload to is writable.

    2. Make sure that your hosting provider does not have php safe mode enabled on the server. This too will stop the auto generation of thumbnails.

If all else fails you could make the thumbnails manually. It is the long way around and real ideal .. especially if you have a lot of images but it is a work around.

    1. Via your ftp you will need to go to wp-content/gallery/
    2. Go to the gallery that you want to create thumbnails for.
    3. Inside that gallery folder create a folder/directory called “thumbs”. With out the ” of course and all lower case that is important!
    4. Ok now go open your favorite image editor and re-size your images to the appropriate thumbnail size. Then save it as thumbs_(your file name).jpg (or whatever image extension your using)
    5. Upload this re-sized thumbnail to the created thumbs directory inside the gallery you need them.

For me, this was caused by memory limit. I edited my config file, adding the following line:

    define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’96M’);

This increased my memory limit from 32 MB to 96 MB, and the problem went away. I do suggest using the javascript console in your browser (I used Firebug), because this is what told me what that the problem was too much memory. I’d have never known that otherwise.

Richard – did you fix this?
I have the exact same problem which has appeared recently to thumbnail creation on my site.

I have 360 galleries with 14k images – I dont need this to stop working.

    archiseek

    (@archiseek)

Somehow the permissions on the thumbs directories which had all previously been fine, were no longer fine, quick chmod and the system is making thumbnails again.

For me, NextGEN Gallery create wrong folder and way for thumbs and images.Something like “%d0%b1%d1%8a%d0%bb%d0%b3%”
First I fixed names of folders and then the way in-Settings of the gallery (click here for more options).
And now all works for me
    Hope this helps someone.
