• Hi there!
One of my clients site is a multisite install with over 60 sites in the network. All of them use NextGen as this is an artists-painters association site.

When I originally set the site up a year ago, I set NextGen in each site to keep backups of original images (Gallery > Options > Images tab) by enabling the “Backup original images” setting. Each artist has a fixed amount of space (50Mb) and they have written instructions to try and upload smaller files and not the original JPGs straight from the camera which often clock above 1Mb each. So some of them are using up their alloted space quickly as they are too technically unsavvy to even begin to know how to optimize images…

So now I’m thinking that keeping backups is unecessary. Images are resized to the correct final size on upload and thumbnail creation is based on the larger image (right?).

My problem is, even if I disable the above setting, it only prevents backups being created for images that will be uploaded afterwards. Existing backups remain.

So I was wondering if there’s an automated way to delete these original image backups from within NextGen or will I have to attempt this in the Linux shell which I’m not so comfortable with.

Thanks for any pointers you can provide!

  • Well, there is no built in function. But it’s a good point, maybe I add this in a future version

That would be awesome Alex and a great addition to an already fantastic plugin!

    Thank you for your response!

    Hi.

Where are the back-up images located? I would like to delete a bunch that are not needed anymore but cannot find them within the ftp structure of the site/plugin/gallery area.

    thanks.
