• I am probably asking for a massive change in the architecture of NextGen Gallery.

NextGen Gallery, by many standards, is the best WP gallery out there. But the current architecture leaves a lot to be desired. Because NextGen Gallery still uses custom SQL tables, it does not play well with a host of up-to-date plugins…SEO, XML sitemaps, multilingual (WPML), breadcrumbs, etc.

Please update it to use custom post types, custom taxonomies, attachment post types, etc.

  • Well, why do you not change the code and contribute this to the community ? To request changes is one thing…

Seems you are offended. That wasn’t the intention. As I said, NextGen is by many standards the best WP gallery out there.

If I could code, I would be happy to contribute in that way. I am simply an end-user/site-owner, and I use WordPress because it is simple. For my gallery software, I used G2, and about a half year ago, moved to G3, but G3 is far from satisfactory. So looking to migrate. NextGen looks promising, but while testing, have come across the issues that I have reported. Hope you can take them in the right spirit.

I will pick up the idea and check what is possible for the future

    Thanks! Greatly appreciated.

I think it will encourage many more people to use NextGen, and of course I would be happy to donate to your coffee fund once this is resolved.

yes, I must agree. It would be a huge improvement, because integrating the galleries with navigation and breadcrumbs would be much better.

but I can’t even imagine the amount of work it is, considering the complexity of nggallery-plugin.

thx a lot for all the work so far.

I agree as well. NextGen is a great plugin. But the improvement suggested by OC2PS will just take it into a different league – the functionality then would make it a great software in its own right.

    Agree.

Ooh! Tough one, Alex. It would seem that this change would take serious refactoring of some of the code.

But on the other hand, I think OC2PS is right. I think that if you are able to deliver this change, then NextGen Gallery will be able to leverage so much more in WordPress, and would become not just the best WordPress gallery, but the best Gallery script bar none, beating the likes of Gallery 3, Coppermine, Piwigo, etc

    Amen to that, Gardner.

NextGen is one of the most important WP plugins out there. But it is being held back by resistance to moving to custom posts and taxonomies. I think if Alex updates the software implementing this, and maintaining all the current features, then this will be the Gallery software to beat. I know – so far I have tried at least 12 software, both standalone and addons for WP, Joomla and Drupal.

I have to add to this. I have used Nextgen almost since it was out and I only think the best of it. When custom post types were introduced, the first thing it came to my mind was this! I’ve always somehow hoped that the author would migrate the database to custom post types. I know it’s a LOT of hard work, but as others already said, it would become a gallery tough to beat. The possibilities would be endless. Just my two cents.

What’s the future of this feature request, now that NextGen has been acquired?
