• It seems that this plugin lacks a very important function: import pictures that are already in the standart wp media library, question that I often read on forums.

So far, I just finished a blog with around 2,000 pictures, all of them consentiously documented with title, alternative title, legend, description, a huge work!

So I intended to setup some galleries with NextGen, according some classification already done.

Unfortunaly the only import function of this plugin allows to import from distant hard drive, local directory or zip file. But not from the wp media library with all its data. I will not type again all the data for my 2,000 pictures, so I will not use NextGen to generate galleries. Stupid isn’t it?

It seems to me so simple to implement such a function in this plugin which would consist:
    1. display a list of pictures in the media library with thumbnails and check box (simple select from…),
    2. make a post with the checkbox checked,
    3. retrive data from the regular wp database and import them in the ngg tables,
    4. COPY (not transfer) the picture file from the media library upload directory to the gallery directory.

Voilà. Except this very annoying lack, good work, pity that it ignors the core of the wordpress library.

  • Agreed. You’d think in this day and age there would be solutions for this stuff. Most wordpress issues remind me of the the early days of digital photography/multimedia, where there were only workarounds. I just had this same issue arise where I didn’t want to re title my images and after much research, there is one only very partial solution and you may be able to find additional solutions if you go this way. With this method, you’ll only be able to download all your images with your title entries as your file name. It won’t bring other wpl information entries back, at least I couldn’t get it to, but if you would rather name your files as your title, as I did, this will work.

You download any/all images from a gallery you’ve created in WP library by using a Firefox plugin called DownThemAll (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/downthemall/). You have to use the plugin on your actual page where your gallery is embedded using the contextual menu (control click on mac) on the page, then the links tab within the plugin. You can then download all the jpeg attachments on that page, rename them using whatever data you like (I used *text*.*ext*) to rename files with the title. Then re-import using the NextGen import. A bit simplistic, but it saved having to re enter all of those titles. Unfortunately the lesson from all this is to have image files set up with all data before any import.

If you’ve found other solutions since writing this, would love to know.

Thanks for this idea, but I don’t wan’t to rename all my file by the picture title. I still don’t understand why NextGen Gallery is unable to import the data from the wordpress library while copying all the selected files to a new location, this plugin is of no help for me to create great galleries in wordpress using already uploaded files with complete metadata. I hope the author will change this soon.
