[Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] File Permissions via FTP disallowed

I use nextgen as my gallery tool. And I typically upload ZIP files via the web based form provided throught Nextgen.

I am trying to archive/backup my HTTPdocs via FTP but when I do so, the main files that have been decompressed into their folders via next gen
(wp-content/gallery/galleryname) hav 600 permissions. The thumbnail folders are fine, I can access and download the thumbnails, but it is always the main image files I cannot access or download.

Any resolutions to this?
