[Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] Cannot use insertion tool

Upgraded to NGG 1.9.0 this morning, now toolbar insertion item opens but dropdown selection menu doesn’t populate, I get the spinning thing and then it stops. I can adjust any other parameter (which reminds me, I’d love to change the defaults in one of those, but there isn’t a direct way to do it), but none of the tabs will let me select a gallery or picture. I have 11 galleries with roughly 10 pictures in each one, so it shouldn’t take long. I cna edit the text in the selection window, but putting the name doesn’t help. It also timed out uploading a 37 MB zipfile this morning, it did seem to take a long while, the second time went fine.
Went to another WP site I run, same everything (server, verson of WP) but older version (1.8.4?) of NGG and it works. I’m going to copy the old plugin over for now so I can use it.
I will try things if we need to experiment to resolve this. Have SSH access and limited terminal chops as well as cpanel.
