[Plugin: Nexgen Gallery] Lightbox opening as lightbox and another viewer

I have an issue with my custom theme that I am not sure how to fix. When I click on my image gallery on a page, it opens as a lightbox but then also as another viewer, a black screen with a few navigation buttons on the bottom. If I close that out, the lightbox screen is underneath. I have tried with lightbox, thickbox, shutter etc. I have also tried deactivating my plugins and it is not a plugin conflict. It seems to be a theme conflict because when I change to the standard wordpress theme, nexgen lightbox works.
