• Before I take the jump and start trying to extend the plugin on my own, I was curious if there are future plans to give the user the ability to assign custom taxonomies both hierarchal and non to media items.

each category basically getting their own set of custom taxonomies attributed to the type.
    audio: tax ‘a,b,c’
    video: tax ‘a,c,d’
    photo: tax ‘a,b,c,d’ etc..

Having tags is a really great start to media organization. Extending it to allow for user created tax fields would take it to entirely new levels.

    Meaning I create custom tax:
    genre:
    artist:
    date:

While we can currently input all of that information into the single tags input, it would be difficult to sort the attributes for display on the page.

As the plugin already has built in templating it would be really easy to create a media archive page that shows the albums/videos that belong to artist ‘x’.

    add in the plugin:

and we would then have an easy ability to display coverart for audio/video on a per tax basis. The autor of that plugin mentioned that it would be an easy change to apply images to media taxonomies. I’ll probably do that tonight.

    thoughts?

  • @anointed I’m the author of the Media Tags plugin. Since I wrote the plugin I’ve seen many discussion about bringing this functionality and tagging for media into the WP core sometime in the 3.x version. So not sure how much time I have left to extend things. I’m not saying I’m abandoning the plugin. Not at all. It is a similar situation with one of my previous plugin, Revisions. This plugin was eventually used as a model for the versioning ability put into WP core.

So again there are many things I would like to add to the Media-Tags plugin over the next few months but really why would I want to add something that will be added to core.

This is the first I have heard about the ideas being added into the core. I’m very glad to hear that they are at least considering upgrading the functionality. IMHO the media gallery is a huge weakness when it comes to running any type of media based large website.

Your plugin in its current state at least gives me some organizational capabilities which I greatly appreciate.

Nearly a year later and I still want to associate songs that I upload with my “bands” custom taxonomy…
