Something like this is definitely possible not only with the WordPress plugin, but with the normal MailChimp forms as well. What we recommend for tracking that information is adding information on the “Signup Thank You” and “Confirmation Thank You”, just as you mentioned, in a hosted page. In MailChimp, you can point specifically to your hosted, custom “Thank You” pages like so:

One thing to keep in mind is that, because the WordPress plugin displays all validation inline, you won’t get that “Signup Thank You” page for anyone who signs up using the plugin. If that’s a dealbreaker, you might want to use the embedded form without Javascript:

I had spotted the existence of the self-hosted option for “Confimation thank you” but had missed the fact that you can also host the “Sign up thank you”. Why, I do not know, since it’s made very clear in the documentation. Momentary blindness…

I would hope that the “Sign up thank you” is an extremely close equivalent to the number of people submitting the form, unless something has gone wrong. And if I want to really check on that I can add my own signup form, as you suggest.

But while we’re on the subject, how about adding GA tracking as an option on the standard “Thank you pages” in the same way as you offer it as a feature on the emails themselves?

You could do that by going to “Lists” -> “View List” -> “List Tools” -> “Google Analytics on Archive/List Pages”. Whew. That was a mouthful.

I wanted to follow-up on tim_lb’s post with a slight variation. So Tim was looking for this, as am I:

This could either be in the form of a Google Analytics ‘event’ or a ‘virtual pageview’.

I have a client that has an inline MC sign-up box that is in the header of the site, using MailChimp 1.2.13. They don’t want a user to leave the page they are on. On signup, this page refreshes, appending the following hashtag to the URL: #mc_signup

Can you share an easy way to track these signups as Events or virtual pageviews without a fair amount of heavy coding?

Tyler, if your client could use a dummy parameter on reload instead of an anchor, something like this

URL?mc_signup=1

Then you would be able to track that straight away in GA and configure goals etc.

It’s also possible to configure GA to use the # in tags etc, but that would take you into the ‘slightly heavy coding’ area because it would have implications for all other GA campaign tracking for a start.

Hi Tim – yep that makes perfect sense. Was hoping to avoid the # coding, agreed. Identifying the confirmation URL isn’t an option in the WP plugin, but I’ll see if I can get in the code with the developer. Thanks much for the thoughts. – Tyler
