• I have the Mailchimp plugin 1.2.9 and I am using the shortcode to pull my form into a page. We need to gather birthdays that include a year (MM/DD/YYYY), so we opted to use the “date” field to do this. I turned off the javascript date picker for the date because the years would not go back far enough for a birth year selection.

All that shows up in our form now is a single blank input box with no formatting for MM/DD/YYYY. We want to keep all of the birthday data uniform. Any ideas on what the problem is?

  • Hey there, Ryan!

Hmm… well, it looks like we are only offering to go back (or forward) a decade with the datepicker javascript. And unfortunately, when disabling that code, there’s no real clue as to how to format that information in the field. We will definitely pass this information along to see what we can iron out for future releases.

However, for now, there are a couple of options that might be helpful. If you want to continue to use the plugin, you could add some “pre-filled” text in that field by adding a predefined value for your list:

So, for example, you could use “mm/dd/yyyy” as the predefined text for that area so that your subscribers know exactly how to format their date field. Here’s generally how it will look in the form:

Or, if you want to get a little fancier, you can also use a slightly more intensive method, laid out in this post:

The other option, which isn’t ideal, would be to forego the plugin entirely and use the embedded form. This can have mixed results depending on what (if any) other plugins are running on the site since it relies on javascript to validate everything inline. However, if you’d like to give it a go, here’s the info on how:

Thanks for the response! We actually opted to do them in separate fields with a drop-down option for the months. As we get sign-ups, we will want to have the option of organizing our list by their birthdays (using the month to sort the order)

My only other thing is that I wish there was a way to better style the form. I wanted to stick the three date fields side-by-side so it would look better than in three separate lines. Since they all sit inside of divs with the same id, I cannot get them to sit side-by-side.

    Hey there, Ryan!

We’ll be happy to pass that bit of feedback along. And if there’s anything else that we can help with, please don’t hesitate to let us know! ??

I talked with support again. We NEED to have an autoresponder working on our list based on user’s birthdays. This seems to HAVE to work with a date field from your form builder.

If the date field does not work correctly on our site, then we cannot collect birthday dates to build our autoresponders.

Ideas?? This could be a make or break for us

    Hey again, Ryan.

Aside from the workarounds mentioned above, another alternative would be to use a “birthday” field within MailChimp in conjunction with the datepicker. Using a “birthday” field instead of just a “date” field would exclude the year, entirely. Since sending would be annually, anyway, excluding the year won’t make a difference.

And if you’ve already got a regular “date” field set up, we have a guide on how to convert that to “birthday” field, as well:

Let us know if we can help with anything else.

    Cheers
