Plugin is Causing Website to Hang on "placehold.it"
-
Hello,
For the past few days I have found that our website is hanging, sometimes for more than a minute, waiting for “placehold.it” to respond and it was driving us crazy trying to figure out how or why on earth would this external website be getting called from within our site, when nobody on our team had added any such external references — and everybody on our team knows better than to tie our own site’s performance down to the unpredictable responsiveness of random 3rd-party vendors.
After downloading the entire site’s plugin set to a local drive and performing a scan for “placehold.it” we discovered that it was your plugin causing the problems due to your use of a graphic for “default thumbnail” that is being called directly from this 3rd Party resource.
I think this is a very bad decision on your part, and I believe that you are soon going to discover a flurry of complaints from your plugin users.
Why would you not simply include an image with your plugin that loads locally, instead of “secretly tying” all of your customer sites to external resources they cannot control?
I am going to remove the reference to this graphic that is causing our site to hang sometimes to the point of failure… but as soon you release an update my changes will be removed and I’m going to stay on top of this and fix it over and over again forever.
Unfortunately — this plugin appears to be a built-in element of our theme, Simpleflex, and I don’t want to down-grade any intended or available functionality — or I would remove it entirely, right now, on the spot — which I always do the moment I discover that a developer has decided to covertly tie my website to some ridiculous external site’s resources.
Unless — Please — perhaps you could just do the right thing and remove this reference from your code that is at this time making all of your plugin client websites hang.
Thank You,
XIMBALO
