[Plugin: Image Widget] How to add image support to existing or custom widgets

Hi,
I would like to add an image to existing or custom widgets in the themes I use. For ex: the RT-Theme 16 provides us with a few custom widgets for Popular and latest posts. I would like to add an image support for the widgets to be displayed in the sidebar. This image would be displayed above the content of that widget.
Is this possible?
which part of the code should I use to provide an upload thickbox and then echo the image?
If not exactly how to do it a nudge in the direction will help me.
