[Plugin: Gravity Forms Custom Post Types] Newbie trying to understand Custom Post Types & GF

    I’m a designer not a coder and have a lot of experience with WP & GF but not with custom post types. What we’re wanting to do is create a submission form to be able to add events to this page: https://writingitreal.com/community/local-readings.

    I’ve installed Custom Post Type UI and the GF Custom Post Types plugin. I’ve created my first-ever custom post type (called readings) with 5 items in the taxonomy all assigned to this “readings” post type. I’ve created the Gravity Form. On the title field I went into Advanced and selected Post Type and chose my new custom type “readings”.

    I’m struggling to figure out the rest. We only need a post title (called location), a website url for it and to know the region of that location (which is what I did with the taxonomy).

    I didn’t see any way to incorporate the taxonomies into the form so I came here and found I was to use the categories option. So far I’m still not getting this all working. I’m wondering if instead of using taxonomies if I need to just be creating each region as its own post type? Would that be better?

    Am I missing something obvious or trying to do more than this can do? I feel so close but so far! Thanks for your help.

    Hi Sheila

    A region taxonomy seems to be the right way to go with this.
    All you need to do is add a dropdown field, then under advanced, select to link it to a custom taxonomy, select your ‘readings region’ taxonomy from the list and you should be good to go.

    what is the URL of the form so I can have a look?

    Never having done this before I was missing the point of taxonomies. I had made each item it’s own separate taxonomy! But I just watched another video and I think I’ve got it. I had to make the umbrella Reading Regions hierarchical and then create the rest as categories of that taxonomy! DUH! So they’re showing up now. YEAH! I just need to figure out why the label I made saying Select a Region isn’t displaying. It just says “Select a”. I need to test the form and figure out how to get the results to embed in the listing. Then this form will be added elsewhere.

    I found how to fix the text displayed on the select option.

    Do you know how I would set it up so that the url provided in the website gets assigned to the text of the listing? I’d rather not have text then url. I’d like the text to be linked to the url. But not sure if there’s anyway to do that using the GF setup. Thanks again.

    Still having some challenges. First, I followed the suggestion in the video and made the form post submission a draft. I get the thank you message for submitting it in the form entry lists as a form entry. But I’m not yet understanding how this becomes a POST. The title is setup as a post type. But it does not show up as a draft in posts nor do I see any way to make it one. I DO see in the Custom Post Types UI interface that I have 2 “drafts” but no way to access them.

    It will not be saved as a post, but rather as a “readings” custom post type. Check how you have it setup in CPT UI as you should have a menu item appearing called “Readings”

    So I do have the menu item Readings and the posts ARE there! Thanks.
