Hi. I am having a persistent problem with the XML Generator that will not go away. I keep trying to use the plugin for my website and I keep getting the same error message:

“There was a problem writing your sitemap file. Make sure the file exists and is writable. Learn more
There was a problem writing your zipped sitemap file. Make sure the file exists and is writable. Learn more”

I followed instructions I found elsewhere about creating a sitemap.xml file and uploading it with the proper permissions. Still no luck. Then I contacted my hosting service. They said:

“I have checked the issue with the ‘XML-SiteMap’ file in the WordPress application. It seems that issue with the application. I have tested by changing the permission of the XML file but the issue is not fixed and also there is no error log for your account to further investigate on this. Hence, I would like to suggest you please contact the application vender or web developer regarding this issue.”

Where do I go from here? Any suggestions? I REALLY need help, because this is preventing me from making my website searchable.

    Thank you!

Set the permissions of the sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz files to 666.

    666 no workie either :-/

You think maybe there is some conflict with other plugins because stiemaps USED to work, like only yesterday?

Anyone get a fix on this? I’m having the same problem and have tried everything they suggest.

I am having the same problem!! Tried changing perms any help would be much appreciated.

    Getting this error message

“There was a problem writing your sitemap file. Make sure the file exists and is writable.”

I pretty much left everything at default.

    Any ideas?

I was using v3.2.4 and I used chmod and set my entire site to 777 and couldn’t fix it. As well as use subdirectories, create my own blank files. Tried pretty much everything. The only way to fix it is to downgrade to 3.2.3 or the alpha 4.0(which i am currently using). Both work fine for me, but 3.2.4 still has the problem if I switch back. Bug maybe….so anyone having this problem may need to switch revision.

I try with 3.2.3 and obtain the same error :S

With 4.0 I can write but obtain new error when I try to see the sitemap:

XML read error: no element found
    Location: https://www.mysite.com/sitemap.xml
Number of line 1, column 1:

Same issues here. Except, when I run it manually it works like a charm. Automatically – not so much. Seems to have just started only a few days ago.

The next big release won’t use static files anymore and therefore all this problems should be fixed. You can help testing to speed up the release schedule ??
