[Plugin: Google Doc Embedder] PDF files not displayed if stored in Google Docs

That error message comes from Google’s viewer rather than the plugin itself. Sometimes I have seen the viewer embed a login screen to access documents stored in Google Docs. If the document is public this should not be necessary; perhaps they have changed the behavior of this recently. I will try to investigate this further.

having the same issue. I get “Sorry, this type of document is not supported for viewing.” I too doublechecked if the document is public. It works with standard google docs but not with pdf’s uploaded. PDF’s uploaded through wordpress work just fine, as do other Google Docs. Thx for an awesome plugin.

Can anyone provide the URL of a file they are seeing this error with? So I have something to go on… ?? Thanks.

I got the solution.
what I did:
1. https://docs.google.com/viewer
2. I Enter the URL “https://jobly.us/wp-content/uploads/worksheet_addition_1.pdf”
3. Click in Generate
4. I copied “For an embedded viewer, use this HTML tag instead:

This doesn’t describe to me why you are having a problem with the plugin, since the steps you’re following are essentially the same as what the plugin does for you. This is the code inserted by the plugin using the shortcode you mentioned:

The only difference I can see is stylesheet related, so if doing it manually works for you, then doing it via the shortcode should do the same thing. I’d like to see if something looks different for you when you use the shortcode. Perhaps you have another plugin that is conflicting with GDE.

Google’s standalone viewer (which is what this plugin embeds) does not support PDF files uploaded to Google Docs. I tried embedding the file from the download link in the full screen view, but that did not work either. This is a limitation of the viewer which sadly my plugin is forced to inherit. You will have to store your PDF file somewhere outside of Google Docs unless another workaround is found.

Thanks for clarifying the issue for me; it will be helpful if someone else reports a problem when trying to do this.

Another question is: if the file is stored localy, in the same directory tree as the website, would it be possible to use relative links instead of absolute.

It is a minor problem, of course. But currently I am working on the test website and when it is built completely, i will have to move to another address and all absolute links will be broken.

Local (relative) links won’t work, because the full URL must be passed to Google’s viewer. You can always put the full (future) URL on the test site; that way they are broken in test but will function correctly in the final version. You could also use your .htaccess file to make the correction to file paths in the future, if having them work in both locales is important.
