Plugin for Small Groups? Message Board and File Upload capabilities?

I have a client that is wanting to have a website that would allow multiple small groups (2-10 people) that could login in to secure “chat room” like portals to share files and leave messages like in a discussion board. Each portal should be kept secure so that only the groups members or admin can get it. Files, such as imgs, pdfs, docs, etc should be able to be read, downloaded and uploaded for the group.

Can anyone recommend plugins for something like this? I was thinking bbpress for the discussion board but not sure of a plugin that can do the file sharing part.
