Plugin file size too big – breaks during plugin update

    Hi Inpsyde team,

    I am a long-time user of the plugin for nearly 10 years.
    In the last days some of my sites broke due to the update to v3.5.0

    My assumption is, that the plugin just growed too big in file size:
    – the ZIP is about 14 MB on disc – while .org plugin team recommends 10 MB
    – the unpacked ZIP is about 60 MB on disc

    Some servers obviously cannot handle this amout of file size and and just broke during the plugin update process.

    I understand that you ship a lot of libraries, no problem with that.

    My suggestion is more like this:
    – split the plugin into a main plugin plus various add-ons
    – any services that require big libraries should only be shipped as add-ons and be installed separately

    This keeps the plugin smaller, and cleaner. And I only need to install what I really need for a project.

    And no, we won’t switch servers only because of this one plugin. The hosting was and is good for a site of this size (won’t name the site here!).

    I am really sorry to say, but after all these years the chance is high that I am moving on to other alternatives.

    Please update BackWPUp to latest 3.5.1 version, the new version is just about 5mb :).

    To clarify, the compressed file is 5mb, but unpacked it’s still 22mb.

    By comparison, version 4.5 of this plugin was 2mb compressed and under 5mb unpacked.

    I’m with David Decker in his original post; if this bloat continues, I will also be looking to replace BackWPup with a lighter, less bloated alternative.

    I will wait to see what happens with the next release.
