[Plugin: Exclude Pages] Exclude by default?

I’d really like to exclude all new pages by default, with the checkbox being used to include rather than exclude them. Can this be easily implemented without rewriting the whole script?
I’m trying to limit the nav bar to four links, but setting a wp_list_items depth of 4 seems to have no effect on this particular theme.
