[Plugin: Events Manager] Marcus, before you convert calendar events to post categories, DON'T D

I THINK rvlawrence meant to say please “let events be implemented as REGULAR post types” and NOT as “CUSTOM post types”.

The other plugin changed from the former approach (at least for its free version) to the latter approach, which has broken all sorts of things that were previously possible when the events were “just” regular posts.

(For me, the biggest change is that events can no longer have categories in common with other posts, greatly reducing flexibility. But there are other things that break when using custom posts.)

Anyway, if you’ve ever tried out TEC 1.x you’ve probably seen what we’re talking about.

If Events Manager can let events just be posts, that would be cool.

However, I do NOT know what rvlawrence means by “cripple the plugin” — I don’t think the other guys intentionally crippled anything?

YES that’s what I meant. Sorry, with the changes they made and the new changes coming to this plugin I was getting confused.

Just make the events as simple as possible so they integrate well with other outside plugins. That’s my main point.

Oh and what I meant by “crippling” is that their events plugin is essentially a closed system and they upsell other plugins they offer to extend the functionality of their calendar plugin. You can’t use any outside plugins because they walled everything off to sit within their plugin only.

An open easy to use system is better and I’m hoping that Marcus’s plugin will become that and easily integrate with outside plugins.

Hi, i think the events manager has a great advantage, namely the events manager already has the categories on a page and not as TEC only so that begins with. This makes the everything a lot easier for us to switch user us. With the posts is yes a technical conversion and has so i hope no conversion of the operation as a result therefore let us by Marcus surprise he makes a good job so far, and the program must be yes not hide behind the competitors.

events will definitely be custom posts, no discussion about that, it’s the only sensible way.

however, if you want events to share post categories, you can do that with any custom posts using register_taxonomy() or similar. that’s the beauty of custom posts, lots of WP integration opportunities.

or have i missed something here?

one thing I will not do is add paid extras everywhere. if you go pro (or not), we work our butts off to add features to both the pro (and free) versions, simple.

The only thing you “missed”, I guess, is that as a non-WP-hacker I have no idea how to use register_taxonomy() to do that, and according to the other guys they can’t use regular categories for their custom posts in all respects. (They created their own categories in a taxonomy, or something.)

rvlawrence’s problem is that lots of existing plugins don’t yet know how to see or work with custom posts, so things that USED to work with regular post events (in TEC 1.6) don’t work for him in TEC 2.x.

If you use custom post types, those same plugins will be incompatible with your software.

well, that wouldn’t be more than a snippet to get it working, so wouldn’t mind whipping that up once the conversion is done.

with regards to other plugins and custom posts, this probably won’t affect us as events currently aren’t posts anyway, those plugins probably don’t work now ??

Is there any way you could show us how exactly we can have the Event Managers posts populate with the rest of the posts on wordpress?

That helped out quite a bit in understanding how this should work yet I’m not sure how to implement this idea with Event manager. How much am I supposed to set thing up on my dashboard and how much has already been done. I know EM is receptive to integration and don’t want to invest time on things that have already been done for me – its such a great plugin.

this is a theme thing, not really anything to do with events manager. themes choose only to show normal posts on their home page, and not any custom post type, which is what EM uses.
