plugin errors after surpassing 20 members

After surpassing 20 team members the plugin performs poorly.
The “upload photo” section disappears for the latest member after being saved, and often other random team member photos are moved into place of the new team member we’re adding.

I’ve seen numerous other threads with similar issues and you say that it’s not the plugin but the server, however we have ruled out max_input_vars (increased via .htaccess with WPEngine hosting, not possible to set it with a php.ini file) but are still experiencing the same issues. We even tried increasing it to 10000.
It doesn’t look like the plugin is conflicting with any other plugins, as the issues still appear with all other plugins disabled, as well as a default theme. I increased the memory limit as well, but it had no effect.
