It sounds to me like something’s wrong with the code block you’re pasting in. I would try re-copying and pasting it, making sure you get the whole thing.

If you want to insert the pixel code on a per-page basis, this plugin work fine. Just be sure you’re using your own pixel ID into the two highlighted areas in that image.
