    Hi

I have been having problems with a website not loading (504 error). I deactivated all plugins and tested them one by one and was surprised that it was Wordfence causing the problem (I have Wordfence installed on all my websites with no issues). I thought I should try uninstalling and then reinstalling a fresh copy of Wordfence. I ticked the checkbox in Options to remove all Wordfence data if the plugin is disabled and then deactivated and tried deleting. I get this message: “Plugin could not be deleted due to an error: Could not fully remove the plugin(s) wordfence/wordfence.php.” Most of the files have been deleted, but configCache.php in the folder tmp remains. I tried deleting this via ftp but it wasn’t possible.

Also, I can see folders in wp-content called wfcache and wflogs which I guess are Wordfence related, but didn’t want to try to remove these in case they weren’t.

Can you advise please. How can I completely remove all evidence of Wordfence?

    thanks
    Mariette

  • Hello Mariette,
if you can’t remove a file via FTP something strange is going on with file permissions on your account. You should always be able to remove files via FTP. I would suggest you ask your host about this.

It is correct that wfcache and wflogs are Wordfence folders and you can safely delete them. You might want to check the database before you try to reinstall to make sure there are no “wf” tables left behind. They should be removed if you chose to delete Wordfence data but it doesn’t hurt to check an extra time if you are having problems.
