WordPress is saying the WordPress Popular Posts plug-in is causing a fatal error on my site. I have deactivated it in recovery mode, but if I activate it again, it gives me the same error message.

    Here are the error details:

    Hi @winetravelista,

Sorry to hear you’re having issues with the latest version of the plugin.

Can you please share more details about your setup? For example, WordPress version?

In the meantime I’ll get you a test version that should fix this problem so you can try it out (so thanks for reporting).

Edit: Alright, here it is. Please download it and install it on your site (Plugins > Add New, then click on the Upload Plugin button at the top left of the screen, WordPress will tell you that the plugin is already installed on your website, click on “Replace current with uploaded”, activate the plugin again and report back your results).

I am getting the same error with this plugin since it updated earlier today.
I downlaoded and added that new plugin you linked above but getting the same error when it activates.

    WordPress version 6.2.2
    Active theme: Responsive (version 4.8.4)
Current plugin: WordPress Popular Posts (version 6.1.2)
    PHP version 8.0.27

    Thanks for the update, @scotttripatrek.

Alright, please follow the same process except download this zip file instead to downgrade to version 6.1.1 while I work on a different solution.

I’ll post a new test zip in a few hours so you guys can try it out (as I’m unable to reproduce that error myself, everything works fine on three different websites I tested).

Thanks for the quick response. I have re-installed the previous version and site working again. Will wait for your update on latest version

    Actually, scratch that.

@scotttripatrek @winetravelista please try this version instead. It should fix the problem for you.

Once you confirm it does please let me know and I’ll release version 6.1.3 right away with this patch.

Thanks. Installed that new version – Version 6.1.2

    Working fine now.

I am getting the message displayed on my site ‘

Important notice for administrators: The WordPress Popular Posts “classic” widget is going away!

This widget has been deprecated. Please replace it with the WordPress Popular Posts block or the wpp shortcode as soon as possible.’

I saw separate support post about this, so will read through how to resolve this.

Terrific, I can go to bed in peace then haha. Thanks for helping out, @scotttripatrek!

Regarding the deprecation notice, please see here.

Thanks for getting this resolved so quickly! The new release solved the issue for me too.

I’m also getting the same error about the classic widget going away.

Not really an error, it’s a notice (semantics, I know, but they’re really not the same thing.)

Basically, I’m letting you guys know in advance that the widget you’re using on your site’s sidebar (or wherever it might be) is going to be removed from the plugin sometime in the near(ish) future (no ETA, but it won’t be right away so you have time to make all necessary changes).

To avoid having your popular posts list disappear from your website you should replace the “classic” widget with either the WordPress Popular Posts block or the [wpp] shortcode.

Since the original issue has been fixed I’m marking this topic as resolved. Please feel free to leave a comment here (or in a new thread) if you have additional questions.
