  • I’m afraid Catablog pretty much put my site out of business and nobody seems to know how to fix it.

    Sorry.

    It caused too much damage.

Also destroyed a wordpress site on localhost.

    Same here!
This plugin completely destroyed my active website.
I had no other plugins installed that could have caused a conflict.
I managed to add 2 catalog items with no problem, but when I added the third one,the page went blank and every single page in my wordpress installation went blank!
I couldn’t even access admin to try and disable the plugin, since it effectively destroyed everything.

Days and days of work on this site, now down the drain…
I had no option but to completely deleted my wordpress installation and now have to recreate the whole site again.
    Very disappointing indeed!

PS. The site was sitting on my own server and not hosted by WordPress.

Yes, just manually deactivate the plugins (as described in the article linked to above) and all should be fine, as long as you never reactivate that plugin.

Thanx for that link, but too late now as I have already deleted the whole installation which off course resulted in me loosing everything else that I had installed in subfolders in my root directory.
    I am sooo upset!
Before deleting wordpress, I tried to fix things by deleting plug-in via ftp, but it made no difference. Then I went on server and dropped all tables for catalog, but also did not make a difference. Hence my decision to delete everything.

Which I had the info in the link you gave me,before I deleted wordpress.

Ok, so I guess I need to bookmark this page, and offer better support. I apologize so much for making anyone feel like they had to delete their entire WordPress installation. For me simply moving catablog out of the plugins directory fixed WordPress in all cases. For a more thorough explanation look at my blog page that talks about the specific cause of the problem.

WordPress Plugin Designs and Memory Leaks

I also hope that we all understand that this plugin is absolutely free and still not considered by me to be a stable release, meaning use at your own risk. I can not help if people do not backup their WordPress installations. For the most part it is as easy as using the Tools > export tool in the WordPress Admin itself.

Also, would people please be specific about which version of the plugin hosed their websites. I am under the belief that version 0.8.1 should be working properly. At least it is working very well on the 3 or 4 installations I have it on, including a VPS and shared hosting from a couple different companies.

    Hi macguru2000,

Sorry if my comment was a bit harsh, I was quite upset when I posted it. I was sooo happy when I found your plugin as it is exactly what I have been looking for,so when it killed my site I was very disappointed.

I know I should have made a WP back up before installing catalog, but I guess since I’ve never had problems with any other plugins before on other sites I have developed, I neglected to do so in this instance, assuming all will be ok. Water under the bridge now….

In any case with regards to your question,I had the latest version of your plugin, I think. I downloaded it from your site this past weekend.
And I had wordpress 2.9 installed.Apart from your plugin,I had no other active plugins running on the site.

Btw, I did delete the plug-in via eft and it made no difference, my site was still nothing but a blank white page and I could not access anything, hence the decision to delete the entire installation and start from scratch.

It would be awesome if this bug can be fixed as I really think it is an awesome plugin, but its needs to play nice inside WP…lol
So if you get the bugs sorted, I would be one of the 1st to make use of your plugin again.

I went to look now on pc to see if I still have the file version that caused the problem, in order to verify the version of catalog that was causing the problem.

I Found the file. It was version Stable tag: 0.8

enigma666666, I would very interested if you could try version 0.8.1 out and let me know how it runs. Please try it on a blank installation of WordPress so we don’t loose any more of your work. Also I would be interested if you could tell me who your web host is and what kind of server you have. windows or linux? Since you say you had a white screen (of death) and not an out of memory error I am very curious what is causing this, I have not seen that behavior myself. Thanks you so much for your help, I really want CataBlog to work well in all setups and be a solid well regarded WordPress plugin.

Another thing you can do to help is install a memory gauge plugin to see how much PHP memory you are using and report it back to me here. The one I am currently using is WP-Memory-Usage.

    Cheers.

    Hi there,

The server is Linux using Virtualmin version 3.78
    Using php version 5.
Memory : 17.92 of 32 MByte after uploading catalog via eft, before activation of Catalog plugin.

Memory : 18.21 of 32 MByte upon activation of catalog in admin panel.

Memory : 17.88 of 32 MByte after choosing catalog options in admin panel.

Memory : 17.89 of 32 MByte after adding 1st item in catalog (i used photo of 319 x 264 dimensions)
Memory : 17.89 of 32 MByte after adding 2nd item in catalog

Now here is where it bombed out the last time, when adding item number 3…that’s when I got the white screen. Holding thumbs here..lol

    Yipeee!!!! No crash!
Memory : 17.89 of 32 MByte after adding 3rd item in catalog.

    Gonna be adventurous now…..
Memory : 17.89 of 32 MByte after adding 4th item.

Awesome! Looks like problem is solved?
Okay I am going to add more items to the catalog today and will let you know if I have any more problems.

Btw, thank you so much for the support and this great plugin!

Great, I’m glad to hear the plugin is working for you. Please keep me informed of any issues or bugs you come across and I will continue to monitor this thread. Also if anyone would like to post links to pages where they are using CataBlog that would be steller, I also really want links for my examples section of the plugin’s development blog at https://catablog.illproductions.net. Cheers!

Will keep you updated and post a link once I’ve recreated the site.
One question if I may…I’ve added tags to the individual items in the catalog, yet the tags do not appear in the tag cloud in the tag cloud side widget.
Is this because I am merely using the catalog as a portfolio with no paypal sales activated? Or do I need to do something additional to get the tags to display in the sidebar?
