[Plugin: Better WP Security] InfiniteWP Updating Issue

    Hey guys,

    I’ve noticed that the InfiniteWP solution for doing bulk updates of WordPress core / plugins / themes will fail if Better WP Security is installed, and all the checkboxes are enabled under the System Tweaks page, Dashboard Tweaks section. These checkboxes hide updates from users that do not have rights within WP to do updates. Disabling these checkboxes will enable InfiniteWP to do bulk remote updating.

    This is a viable workaround, so not sure anything needs to be done, but it’d be great if you could look into it.

    One other thing – I notice that these checkboxes are designed for use primarily in Multi-Site installations. When I have them disabled on single-site installs, they show up as a red ‘unsecure’ item in the Better WP Security dashboard. Perhaps you could mark it as ‘yellow’ for single-site installs, and red for multi-site installs, if they are unchecked?

  • There is an issue using the Better WP Security plugin with InfiniteWP. Performing remote plugin / theme / core updates with InfiniteWP will fail with an error: ‘An unknown error occured.’

    To resolve this, ensure under the ‘System Tweaks’ page of Better WP Security, ensure the three checkboxes under ‘Dashboard Tweaks’ are _NOT_ selected. These three checkboxes stop users from seeing information about theme / plugin / core updates if they don’t have rights to do updates within WordPress. For some reason the InfiniteWP client is affected by these, and will not do remote updating if these are enabled.

    Disable them, and it all works fine. This shouldn’t be an issue for most people, as those features in Better WP Security were designed for multi-site installations. It does leave a ‘red’ unsecure option under the Better WP Security dashboard, which will annoy perfectionists, but it should not be a security concern.

    Thanks. Under single site it shows up as red because of the types of accounts many folks create for guest blogging, etc.

    So what is infinateWP, is that a service or just a plugin?

    InfiniteWP (https://infinitewp.com/) is a standalone PHP application that allows you to manage multiple WordPress sites from one dashboard. It has a plugin (InfiniteWP Client) which you download from the WordPress Repository to your WP sites. This allows you to securely control that site from your one dashboard. I have ~30 sites I’m managing with it, and this number is increasing exponentially. This allows me to bulk update plugins / themes / wordpress core.

    I’m guessing the method by which the ‘InfiniteWP Client’ plugin searches the site its installed in, and interrogates what needs updating is being blocked by the Better WP Security settings (as detailed in my original post). I have no idea at this stage whether the issue lies with InfiniteWP or Better WP Security, and the workaround listed does keep me using both solutions successfully.
