[Plugin: Better WP Security] incorrect .htaccess update

  • I’m running version 3.3 of Better WP Security. This morning, Better WP Security updated the .htaccess file (in order to ban an IP address). After the update the .htaccess contained only the section for Better WP Security and the rest of the .htaccess file content was removed. Since the WordPress rewrite rules were removed nobody was able to access the articles (clicking on the links for the articles gave a 404 error). I restored an older version of the .htaccess file in order to fix the problem. I then unchecked the box so that Better WP Security will not update the WordPress core files.

    I just wanted to let you know that just a few minutes ago the same happened to me. The site produced a 500 script error and was not available untill I changed the .htaccess file. I am using WP Super Cache at the same time, but Better WP Security deleted all permalink rewrite rules from WordPress and all entries from the cache plugin.

    I have currently disabled this plugin. Any suggestions? I still would like to use it, but I also don′t want ro risk to break the site again.

    Thanks for the feedback. I will try to get a fix out this week or next (as soon as I get back home).

    I had this happen quite some time ago, along with the empty “Deny from” lines .htaccess. After subsequent updates of the plugin, there were no more problems.

    Hi Dan,

    Has WP Better Security updated your .htaccess file since the 3.3 release has come out?

    I don’t know. When did it come out, and have there been changes in the number and types of security functions that create an .htaccess directive?

    Thanks @joneisman, there was a bug for there for a release or two after I changed the output format for the .htaccess rules. As you have pointed out this was fixed in 3.3

    @dan just want to check that you didn’t get any memory notices during the change.

    No, I didn’t see any memory notices. I just saw an incorrect .htaccess file generated (using version 3.3). The earlier problems with a blank IP address has been corrected. However version 3.3 introduced a new problem (as described at the start of this thread). I’m not in any rush to see this fixed since I won’t be allowing Better WP Security to update the WordPress core files (I will be making the updates manually from now on).
