In my case it started to happen when I changed file and folder permissions to read-only.

To resolve this you will need to add write permission to backups folder under the plugin directory (i.e. better-wp-security).

Better WP Security has nothing to do with comment spam. Akismet is what you need to stop spammers. And it is already in your WordPress. Just get an API key and activate the plugin.

The Sistem Tweaks menu there is an option to reduce spam comments, but still a lot of incoming spam attack.

Note that it says “This option will cut down on comment spam by denying comments from bots with no referrer or without a user-agent identified.”

So if spam bot somehow identifies itself (user-agent is set), you will receive spam comment.

Exactly naysila. The comment spam reduction I use in the plugin is in response to a very specific issue I had and is not a replacement for Akismet.
