• A database corruption issue yesterday forced me to try a restore via BackWPup. It took me a while to work out how to do it (happy to help with clearer English instructions, if that might help), but after completing it threw an error report telling me that my wp-config file should define the character set as Latin-1 (my wp install has always been utf8). I changed the wp-config file – everything hung – but when I decided to change it back to utf8 the database was functional, *but* I now get a lot of strange characters in place of ‘ and ” o etc in posts.

2 issues therefore: shouldn’t BackWPup respect the character set selected by the user, as defined in their wp-config file?

How do I clean up four years worth of posts?

    All help gratefully received…

    Hi Daniel,

I moved the last back up file into the http root folder (I had to remove the “remove old SQL” file before BackWPup would see it), then ran the restore.

That gave me an error message saying something like “Charset should be Latin-1″ in wp-config”. Site wasn’t working, so I made that change to wp-config. Still not working, but when I changed wp-config back to utf8, site was working, *but* with the character issues I described above.

Happy to give you access. Email me at gareth at hot-topic.co.nz.

    Cheers
